Radioactivity measurements
The activity of a radioactive element is measured in becquerels
The number of disintegration per second in this element is expressed in Becquerel (
Bq )
It should be noted that the activity will depend directly of the amount of radioactive
material
The measurement of the absorbed dose is done in Gray
( Gy )
The dose received by a body exposed to a radiation corresponds to the amount of
energy received by this body
The Gray (Gy) corresponds to an energy of 1 joule per kg of irradiated material
But we also measure the effect over the time :
A dose rate of 1 Gy/h will be much greater than an irradiation of a few minutes or a
few milliseconds
Measuring the biological effect is done in Sievert ( Sv ) , but most often it is expressed
in milli-Sievert per year
The tissues and organs being more or less sensitive to radiations , the equivalent dose
was weighted by a specific risk factor for each tissue or organ so as to obtain the
effective dose , or efficient dose , expressed in Sievert ( Sv )
This system has the advantage of being able to place all types of exposure to ionizing
radiation on the same scale of risks
The value of the effective dose is generally very small , it is most often expressed in
milli Sievert ( mSv ) and involves the time
The effects of the radioactivity on living organisms are not only related to the
Becquerels , because :
The disintegration of a cesium or iodine atom does not release the same energy
Emitted radiations can be very different
The radiation does not reach the body by the same way , depending of the parts of
the body that are affected , this causes different effects
To better understand the relationship between these three units, we must watch a
